Colin Craig, Prairie director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, describes Chief Spence’s pay as “quite high.â€
“Especially when you consider she serves a pretty small community, yet she makes more than the mayors of Thunder Bay and North Bay, Ontario. Ultimately, when cases of high salaries for aboriginal politicians arise, that means there is less money to help the grassroots,†Mr. Craig said.
The First Nation, where about 1,800 people live on reserve, is no stranger to scrutiny. A housing crisis in 2011 triggered a state of emergency and Prime Minister Stephen Harper accused the band of mismanaging its finances.
A subsequent audit looking at how $100-million in federal dollars had been spent highlighted questionable spending practices, some of which occurred under the helm of Chief Spence.

Lots of money going to reserves but as Case says, the cream is siphoned off and never gets to be used on intended purpose. Indian Act - out!

There are corrupt and self serving band leaders and they need to be reigned in, but to say they all are corrupt is just wrong.
Corruption and conflicts of interests occur at all levels of governments starting at RMs, towns, cities, provincial and federal governments. A lot of RM councilors don't understand the conflict of interest guidelines. They are your neighbors and fellow farmers!
Bill Boyd and the GTH is an example of corruption at a high level. Does that make all Sask Party MLAs corrupt?
If corruption is such a big issue for you how is it so many Sask Party supporters continue to condone or ignore the obvious corruption and dirty deals of Bill Boyd and Brad Wall? Not much complaining or accountability when your guys are in power! Lets complain about the Indian Bands instead! LOL

If you expect first nations to be accountable, you better make sure Sask Party government is also accountable. If you are not prepared to stop electing the Sask Party who turns a blind eye towards corruption and dirty deals then what right do you have to criticize first nations corruption? It's a double standard.
